Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Limits Comments on X Amid ‘Woke’ Casting Controversy

Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey is facing backlash before it has even premiered in the United States.

The highly anticipated movie — out on July 17 — has gotten rave early reviews and features a star-studded cast including Travis Scott, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Elliot Page, Tom Holland, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and more.

However, some casting decisions have sparked criticism online, with some conservative commentators accusing the film of pushing “woke” ideology. The backlash has centered largely around the casting of Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and false claims surrounding Page’s role.

Now, it appears discussion surrounding the film on X has been limited. A look at the movie’s official account shows that replies have been restricted, with a message appearing under each tweet in the comments section that reads, “only some accounts can reply” alongside a lock symbol.

Conservative pundits have reacted to the cast choices in recent months, with pundit Matt Walsh criticizing Nyong’o’s Helen of Troy in May. Walsh claimed Nolan “knows that he would be called racist if he gave ‘the most beautiful woman’ role to a white woman,” per the Daily Mail.

Elon Musk, who owns X, also agreed with Walsh’s take, replying “true” to the post, per the outlet.

Musk also allegedly called Page’s casting of Achilles as “one of the dumbest and twisted things I’ve ever heard,” per the report.

Still, Musk doubled down, claiming he was “not mocking” the trans actor’s “masculinity.” “I’m denying its existence,” he wrote.

Following news that The Odyssey‘s X account had limited replies, online users shared their opinions.

“I wonder how well The Odyssey will do at the box office. Wild horses won’t drag me there,” one user wrote.

“Helen and Athena were White. This is woke DEI trash,” wrote another. “I am the target audience. I actually read Odyssey and Iliad on my own and they sit on my office desk along with other classics. I will not pay for this feminist translation of a Greek classic. This movie is an abomination.”

“The Odyssey is an amazing story. Folks won’t go see it though, because you ruined the story by interjecting woke ideology into it. Sad,” another X user wrote.
