Cameron Diaz Is Pushing for Another Charlie's Angels Film (EXCL)
Back in January, Cameron Diaz was instrumental in organizing a Charlie’s Angels Zoom call reunion. Now, a source exclusively tells In Touch that she’d love to reunite for another installment of the project, even if others, including former costar Lucy Liu, are skeptical about its viability.
“Despite some iffy reviews and a less-than-optimal launch, Cameron’s comeback in Back in Action has been welcomed by her fans, and millions of people have watched the movie on Netflix. She’s counting it as a win and is hungry for more projects like it,” the insider says. “The first two Charlie’s Angels movies, even though they were produced by Drew Barrymore and her company, focused on Cameron, and she loved making them.”
The source adds that the Holiday actress, 52, “would come back” to the Charlie’s Angels franchise “in a heartbeat,” noting that Cameron “really was the glue that held both those movies together.”
The Charlie’s Angels films starred Cameron as Natalie Cook, Drew, 50, as Dylan Sanders, and Lucy, 56, as Alex Munday, three private investigators known as “Angels” who work for the unseen millionaire Charlie Townsend. Demi, 62, starred in the second movie, Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, as villainous former Angel Madison Lee.
Cameron, Drew, Lucy and Demi have remained friends since Full Throttle premiered in 2003, although it has been a rare sight to see the four of them together at the same time. Their Zoom call earlier this year, which was made to celebrate Demi’s Oscar nomination for The Substance, marked the first time the four actresses reunited since Lucy’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in 2019.
“We are four women who love each other, respect each other, have known each other, have worked together, and celebrate female friendship,” Drew said on the Zoom reunion, which was filmed for Vanity Fair.
“I think I can speak for all of us — we are so proud of you,” Lucy told Demi. “This performance, you’ve always had it in you and in all of the work that you’ve done. There’s so much vulnerability in the strength that you are able to put on camera.”

Unfortunately, while Cameron is itching to get all the Angels back together again to film another movie, it might not be so easy for her former castmates.
“It’s a lot trickier for Drew to make another one of these movies now because she isn’t producing films much anymore and has been obsessively focused on her successful daytime talk show,” the insider continues. “It’s an even more difficult proposition for Lucy, who never really enjoyed making those movies but forged strong friendships with her fellow actors nevertheless.”
Lucy voiced her uncertainty about whether or not a third installment in the original Charlie’s Angels film series would happen in a January 2024 interview with Variety.
“I honestly don’t know how that’s going to be feasible. There have been so many iterations, even after the fact … In some ways, it’s such a strange thing to think about it. Times have changed so much since then,” she said. “At that time, when we were doing publicity, they had never before had three women on a magazine cover. They didn’t even know how to do it.”
Lucy continued, “It was such a strange thing for women to collaborate and be seen as colleagues and friends. It was such a big moment in time, and now it’s shifted. Even when I was doing Ally McBeal, there had never been a lead woman in that way. There was Mary Tyler Moore and things like that, but the focus has changed. I’m not in charge of that, but I always enjoy the time that I have and then I move on. I never really dwell on anything like that. But I really would be shocked if that happened.”
Though Cameron would be thrilled to make Charlie’s Angels 3 happen, the source concludes that she’s just happy to be back on the acting scene.
“Even if nothing comes of it, the important thing is that Cameron is finally getting back her appetite for mainstream success and for making big movies again,” the insider says. “It’s a huge change, and for the industry as a whole, it’s a welcome one because Cameron is such a unique talent!”
