A bittersweet time. Angela Deem mourned the death of her beloved mother, Glenda Standridge, after returning home to Georgia on the Sunday, September 20, episode of 90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? The reality star was beside herself in grief following her Nigerian nuptials to long-distance love, Michael Ilesanmi

Before hopping on a plane, the season 5 star, 54, blamed herself for not being in the United States during her mother’s hospitalization. “Maybe it’s my fault,” she vented. “I’m ready to go home because my mom needs me.”

Michael, 31, was understandably sad to see Angela leave so shortly after they tied the knot, but wholeheartedly supported her decision to return to America. “She needs to take care of her mom and I need to be strong for her,” he said in the confessional as they arrived at the international airport.

In the next scene, Angela admitted she had anxiety while pulling up to the hospital, noting she had been on an “emotional rollercoaster” after her wedding. She was feeling very upset in the moments leading up to their reunion, but refused to cry in front of her mother because she didn’t want to stress her out. Angela tearfully revealed she would be grateful just to hold Glenda’s hand.

“Angela made it back in time to see her mother,” a message from producers read across the screen. “10 days later, Angela’s mother passed away.” Glenda died at the age of 77 on February 8, shortly after the couple exchanged their vows.

Angela was devastated, but at peace knowing her mom wasn’t “hurting” anymore, she told daughter Skyla as they looked back on good times they had.

“At least she got to see the pictures [from the wedding]. That makes me feel better,” Angela said. Michael made an effort to stay in touch over the phone, but the TV personality confessed it was hard not to have him around.

Later on, the couple discussed his visa status and Michael said the process could take anywhere between nine and 18 months. Despite the less than ideal timeline, he was still optimistic and told Angela to keep her head up until then.

90 Day Fiancé: Happily Ever After? airs on TLC Sundays at 8 p.m. ET.
