Before Teen Mom star Mackenzie McKee found love with her fiance, Khesanio Hall, she was married to ex-husband Josh McKee for almost nine years. In light of her current engagement and pregnancy news, fans are wondering why Josh and Mackenzie got divorced.

Why Did ‘Teen Mom’ Alum Mackenzie McKee and Ex-Husband Josh McKee Divorce?

Mackenzie and Josh – who share kids Gannon, Jaxie and Broncs – split several times before she confirmed their final breakup in July 2022. After they tied the knot in 2013, Mackenzie and Josh broke up and got back together several times.

The high school sweethearts nearly hit a breaking point in their marriage when Mackenzie’s mom, Angie Douthit, died in December 2019 because she believed he wasn’t there for her. Their issues continued in May 2020 when Mackenzie publicly claimed that Josh cheated on her with her cousin in a social media post.

“What all went on? idk my family will never be the same and we are all torn,” Mackenzie wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post. “I WAS NOT only hurt by him, but by her.”

She later clarified, “Josh was texting and calling [Mackenzie’s cousin] for advice on how to handle me and to me, that was wrong on both ends and enough to walk away.”

Following years of issues, Mackenzie announced that she and Josh had officially ended their romance in July 2022.

“With all the messages I’m receiving and articles coming out, I wanted you guys to hear what’s going on from me alone,” she wrote in a since-deleted Instagram post. “Sometimes things work and sometimes, no matter how hard you fight, it just doesn’t work out. I am breaking my silence about Josh and I being done.”

The MTV star added, “I will always respect him as the father of my children but it’s time for me to find my happy.”

She continued to share insight into their split while talking to Celeb Buzz, stating that she was “stepping into an entire new life and new me” following the split.

“I’m so thankful for the past 12 years with Josh and what they taught me. Josh and I are both still young with an entire life ahead of us,” Mackenzie said.

After saying that she wished “nothing but peace and happiness for him and his future,” Mackenzie made it clear that she wanted to take her future into her own hands. “The old me would have released a story about how awful Josh is, what he did and why this marriage is ending,” she said. “The new me understands that we are both walking away from this with deep scars and our kids love us both despite the pain we brought one another.”

The U.S. Sun reported that Mackenzie and Josh’s divorce was finalized in May 2024, and she was awarded partial custody of their three kids.

The former couple agreed to a shared parenting plan where they “must mutually agree to all extracurricular activities,” and they also agreed to split all finances related to the kids’ hobbies.

Meanwhile, the agreement stated that Mackenzie will take on the majority of the child care.
