Tommy in 'The Last of Us' is played by Gabriel Luna.
Joel Miller (Pedro Pascal) has led The Last of Us since day one, but this season, his brother Tommy (Gabriel Luna) takes on a more key role in the popular HBO series.
In Touch reveals everything fans need to know about Tommy and the actor who plays him.
Warning: Spoilers Ahead!
Who Is Tommy in ‘The Last of Us’?
Tommy is Joel’s younger brother. He is a caring and idealistic survivor and a current leadership figure at Jackson Hole. Following the Cordyceps brain infection (CBI) outbreak and Joel’s daughter Sarah Miller’s (Nico Parker) tragic death, he and Joel lived and survived together for many years.
However, the violent steps they had to take to stay alive led to Tommy suffering nightmares and the pair eventually had a falling out over their differing moral views of how they should live in a post-apocalyptic world.
Tommy and Joel were reunited in season 1 of The Last of Us when the former smuggler and Ellie Williams (Bella Ramsey) stumbled upon the Jackson settlement. In season 2, it was revealed that Joel and Ellie had been permanent members of the community for around five years.
Who Is Tommy’s Family in ‘The Last of Us’?

Tommy is married to Maria Miller (Rutina Wesley) – who was the leader of the Jackson, Wyoming, group of survivors before Tommy joined the community. They share a young son, Benjamin “Benji” Miller (Ezra Benedict Agbonkhese).
He also serves as an uncle figure to Ellie as Joel essentially took on the role of her adoptive father.
Who Plays Tommy in ‘The Last of Us’?
Tommy is played by Gabriel Luna. He is known for his work as Robbie Reyes AKA Ghost Rider in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as for his role in the film Terminator: Dark Fate, and guest starring roles in shows such as Love, Death & Robots, True Detective, FUBAR and more.

Tommy’s Reaction to Joel’s Death in ‘The Last of Us’
While the show and the game have followed each other in story and pace fairly closely this season, there have been a few changes – one big one is that Tommy was not present for Joel’s murder like he was in the game.
Instead of accompanying Joel on patrol, Dina (Isabela Merced) joins him, while Tommy stays in Jackson with his family. He later helps defend their community from a devastating attack by a horde of Infected.
This means that as of the end of episode 2 of season 2, Tommy is not yet aware that Joel has been killed. However, in the game, Tommy is furious after Joel’s death and becomes hellbent on avenging his brother throughout the remainder of the story.
How Does Gabriel Luna Feels About Joel’s Death in ‘The Last of Us’?
While many fans of both the video game franchise and the show were left utterly devastated and confused when they first experienced Joel’s shocking demise, Gabriel admitted that he feels “light as a feather” now that he doesn’t have to keep it a secret anymore.
“This is actually therapeutic. I love talking about it — the incident that drives everyone down into descent, into revenge and anger and thirst for blood that doesn’t seem quenchable,” he told Esquire in an April 2025 interview. “I can’t wait for the world to see it. It’s one people will talk about for a long time.”
