Things got awkward at the Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning when Tom Cruise was asked what his Father’s Day plans were amid his estrangement from daughter Suri Cruise.

“Just having fun, man,” the A-lister, 62, told E! News on the red carpet Sunday, May 18, before listing, “Making movies, big adventures, having a great time.”

The publication uploaded a clip from the interview on YouTube later that day, and fans shared their unfiltered thoughts in the comments section of the post.

“A simple question about Father’s Day and he can’t answer it,” one person wrote. “He has gotten to a point where all he can talk about is movies and his love of movies. What about being a parent, Tom? There was a time when that was important to you. Sad for this man.”

A second fan commented, “Not interested in answering the father question. His biggest failure.”

Tom’s relationship with Suri, 19, who now goes by Suri Noelle, reportedly dwindled after he and ex-wife Katie Holmes divorced in 2012. The Top Gun star was last seen with his daughter the following year.

“It was entirely Tom’s decision not to see Suri,” a source exclusively told In Touch in July 2024.

Tom has remained relatively tight-lipped about his bond with Suri, but gave rare insight about coparenting with Katie, 46, in November 2013.

“Listen, when there is a divorce … things change. And it’s more complicated,” he said at the time. “You have to ask for permission and organize schedules to make things happen. So it’s not an ideal situation.”

In addition to Suri, Tom shares eldest kids Isabella Cruise, 32, and Connor Cruise, 30, with first-wife Nicole Kidman.

Although Tom’s relationship with Suri appears to still be estranged, the teenager is close with her mom. An eyewitness who attended Suri’s LaGuardia High School’s Class of 2024 graduation exclusively told In Touch that she “couldn’t stop smiling.”

“[Katie] looked so proud, standing by her side and posing for photos,” the insider continued.

Tom wasn’t in attendance, but was seen in high spirits at Taylor Swift’s concert in London the next day.

“He was trading friendship bracelets with superfans and dancing to ‘Shake It Off’ in a crowd filled with young ladies who were around his daughter’s age. This after skipping Suri’s graduation — it’s like he’s living a double life,” a third insider exclusively told In Touch in July 2024.

The following month, the Dawson’s Creek alum gushed over Suri’s next chapter in life as a college student at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

“I’m proud of my daughter,” Katie told Town & Country on August 13, 2024. “Of course, I will miss the close proximity, but I’m really proud of her and I’m happy.”

The doting mom added, “I remember being this age, this time of beginnings. It’s exciting to learn about yourself, and I loved that time, so it makes me happy to think about it like that.”

Despite the physical distance between the mother-daughter duo, Suri knows how to make her mom feel special.

In December 2024, Suri celebrated Katie’s 46th birthday by sending her a gorgeous bouquet of purple roses.

“I am so grateful for all of my blessings [pink heart emoji] especially my daughter [flower emoji],” Katie wrote via Instagram Stories at the time.
