Teen Mom OG fans watched as Catelynn Baltierra (née Lowell) and husband Tyler Baltierra struggled navigating firstborn daughter Carly’s open adoption over the years. Now, Catelynn exclusively reveals to In Touch how the couple’s three youngest daughters — Novalee, Vaeda and Rya — have reacted to their estrangement from their oldest biological sister.
“I would have to say that our kids are kind, they haven’t really asked the questions, so we haven’t dove into the conversation of like them cutting off contact and stuff,” Catelynn, 32, tells In Touch. “Um, obviously if the questions come up, we answer them, but like, we aren’t gonna just like, you know, Nova’s only 10 and she’s the one who really can only make the sense of it and understands it. Vaeda, she’s still too young, and so Rya is still too young too. I feel like that would be traumatic for a kid, you know?”

Catelynn and Tyler, 33, gave birth to daughter Carly in 2009. The couple — who were boyfriend and girlfriend at the time — shared their journey as they chose to place Carly for adoption on an episode of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant. Cameras captured the heartbreaking moment when Catelynn and Tyler handed Carly over to her adoptive parents, Brandon Davis and Teresa Davis. Catelynn and Tyler originally planned to have an open adoption, which would allow annual in-person visits and calls, but their access to Carly has dwindled over the years.
Catelynn and Tyler went on to get engaged in January 2010 and wed in August 2015. The couple has since welcomed three more children together: daughter Novalee, 10, daughter Vaeda, 5, and daughter Rya, 3.
The MTV personality says that she and Tyler don’t speak with Carly’s adoptive parents, although Carly does still have some visitations with the reality couple.
“I would say the relationship as of now is still non-existent with her parents,” Catelynn shares about their current standing. “We definitely, there still is no communication. Don’t know when there will be, but you know, I’m open for it if that’s ever what Carly wants. I don’t really care what they want. I just want whatever Carly wants to happen, so.”
“We’re kind of used to seeing them every other year, so I’m sure the questions will start to come up soon of like, ‘Hey, are we gonna see her this year?’ And then we might have to have those conversations, but, um, as of now we’re just kind of going with the flow and, you know, we will answer questions as needed and in the right way.”

As for whether or not Carly would want to spend more time with her sisters, Catelynn says she won’t draw any conclusions.
“I don’t wanna make any assumptions ’cause you know, if it is too hard for her, I could see that and I could understand, you know,” Catelynn added, noting she will support Carly either way. “So whatever. Yeah. So like, whatever she wants, that’s what I want for her too.”
In the upcoming second half of Teen Mom: The Next Chapter‘s second season, Catelynn comes to grips with losing contact after discovering that Carly’s adoptive parents allegedly blocked Catelynn.
“It was difficult. For the longest time I was like, ‘I think I’m pretty healed from my adoption trauma.’ I’ve done lots of therapy, worked on it really hard,” she told People. “And then, when all of this happened, I found myself in like a really bad place, like adoption PTSD for a few weeks to a month where it was just like randomly crying out of nowhere, [dealing with] anxiety and sadness.”
“It made me open my eyes to see that I feel like any birth parent, you never really heal from this, ever,” she added. “You can work on it for years but you will always carry the hurt and sadness and sorrow for the rest of your life. And that’s something really hard to like think about.”
Teen Mom: The Next Chapter airs on TV Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET.
