If Nancy Guthrie is in fact being held for ransom, it appears that the person or people responsible for taking Savannah Guthrie’s 84-year-old mother may be caught because of clues they left behind.

Former FBI hostage negotiator Chip Massey told the Daily Mail in an interview published Tuesday, February 10, that there are two important details they didn’t seem to think through, including the blood found at the scene and the medication Nancy needs to take daily.

“I think what is troubling is the apparent struggle that happened at the doorway of the house,” said Massey. “It tells us that they didn’t plan this that well, they didn’t have enough people to help and ensure that this was going to be done safely without causing harm. So there’s a number of questions.”

Now that the case has entered its second week, Massey pointed out that Nancy has to be taken care of to remain alive as potential abductors await their ransom demands.

“They have to ensure that no one else knows what’s happening around them,” he added. “They have to be very secure in their environment.”

“The longer it goes on, it does not work in the abductors’ favor both from a standpoint of this woman’s health and well being, and from a standpoint of them being discovered,” he explained, noting that the world knows of Nancy’s disappearance and is out there looking.

“They have to be very, very aware of people being alerted,” Massey said, adding that an average abductor is “not somebody who wants to put in a lot of work.”

“This case works against that theory for sure,” he said.

Nancy was reported missing on February 1 by family members after she failed to show up at church. Her whereabouts remain unknown as the situation is being treated as a possible abduction.

During a press conference held February 5, authorities revealed that they are taking one of the ransom notes related to Nancy’s disappearance very seriously.

Two deadlines were given for their demands. The first deadline was at 5 p.m. on February 5, and a second deadline was February 9 if the initial demand is not met. However, “no proof of life” for Nancy has been provided.

Savannah and her family said in an emotional plea via her Instagram that they are willing to pay for Nancy’s return.

Nancy is described as 5 feet, 5 inches tall and weighs around 150 pounds; she has brown hair and blue eyes. While it’s been said that Nancy does not live with any cognitive issues, her life could be in danger if she does not take her medication daily, per authorities.

The FBI has announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the recovery of Nancy “and or the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in her disappearance.”
