Meghan Markle kicked off her “Confessions of a Female Founder” podcast debut in a big way, revealing for the first time that she suffered from the “scary” condition postpartum preeclampsia.
The Duchess of Sussex, 43, made the confession about her “huge medical scare” while talking to her first guest, Bumble founder Whitney Wolfe Herd, on Tuesday, April 8.
“We both had very similar experiences though we didn’t know each other at the time with postpartum, and we both had preeclampsia. Postpartum preeclampsia,” Meghan told listeners, calling it, “so rare and so scary.”
Postpartum preeclampsia is a rare condition that occurs when a woman has “high blood pressure and excess protein” in her urine soon after childbirth, according to the Mayo Clinic. It requires immediate attention as if left untreated, postpartum preeclampsia can cause seizures or more serious consequences such as a stroke.
“And you’re still trying to juggle all of these things, and the world doesn’t know what’s happening quietly,” Meghan shared. “And in the quiet, you’re still trying to show up for people – mostly for your children — but those things are huge medical scares.”
“I mean life or death, truly,” Whitney, 35, added.
The Suits alum didn’t reveal whether she had the condition following the birth of Prince Archie, 5, or Princess Lilibet, 3. Meghan shares both children with her husband, Prince Harry.
While Meghan and Harry, 40, decided to forgo the royal family tradition of posing with their newborn outside of the hospital, the couple did a photo-call for selected media outlets at England’s Windsor Castle on May 8, 2019, two days after Archie’s birth.

Whitney gushed over Meghan’s courage to put herself on the world stage so soon after delivering her first-born child.
“I mean, I’ll never forget the image of you after you delivered Archie, and the whole world was waiting for his debut,” the businesswoman shared. “I was either just becoming or about to become a new mom, and I was like, ‘Oh my God, how is this woman doing this? How is this woman putting on heels and going and debuting a child in this, you know, beautiful outfit in front of the entire world?'”
Whitney added, “I could barely face a doorbell delivery for takeout food in a robe.”
The Tinder cofounder welcomed son Bobby in 2019 followed by the birth of son Henry in 2022. She shares both children with husband Michael Herd.
Meghan discussed how their timing of becoming moms coincided with an era in which they were able to spend more time with their children.
“We became moms in the pandemic, post-pandemic culture, where there is so much working from home … I don’t leave the house to go to an office; my office is here,” the As Ever founder explained.
Meghan went on to reveal her daughter’s daily routine.
“Lili still naps, she gets picked up early and she naps. She only has a half day in preschool. If she wakes up and wants to find me, she knows where to find me, even if my door is closed to the office. She’ll be sitting there on my lap during one of these meetings with a grid of all the executives,” Meghan told listeners. “I wouldn’t have it any other way. I don’t want to miss those moments. I don’t want to miss pickup if I don’t have to. I don’t want to miss drop-off.”
“What I do love the most about having young kids, in this chapter while I’m building [business], is the perspective that it brings because you’re building something while your child’s going through potty training … and both are just as important,” she continued. “It’s like, ‘Great, OK, where’s the Cheerios? Well done.’ And then you’re championing your team 10 minutes later about something that is really high value for the world. In your own world, that’s super high value. And in [Lili’s] world, that’s super high value.”
