He’s really hit rock bottom. Matt Lauer was abruptly fired from the Today Show in November 2017 due to sexual harassment allegations after being a part of the production for nearly 25 years. Then his wife, Annette Roque, kicked him out of their house in the midst of their divorce proceedings. Now, an insider tells In Touch exclusively in the latest issue — on newsstands now — that he’s “devastated” and in a tight spot financially after selling his $44 million estate in the Hamptons, where he’s been staying since he lost his $25-million-a-year job. “It’s hard to imagine how things could get worse,” the source said.

“Matt’s going through a really tough time,” the source continued. “The divorce is costing him a fortune, plus he has to pay child support for their three kids [Jack, 18, Thijs, 12 and daughter Romy, 15].” The insider noted that Matt, 61, “Used to love living the high life, splashing out on cars, properties, clothes and expensive dinners. But now Matt has to cut back and be on a tight budget, which is a real shock to the system for him.”

Matt already sold the multimillion-dollar Upper East Side apartment where he used to spend work nights, and now he has to let go of the 14,000-square-foot home he bought from Richard Gere in 2016. “Matt’s devastated that he has to sell it, but he doesn’t have much choice,” the insider claimed. “He needs the money.”

The source added that the former talk show host is “still close to some of his old pals, but most of his Hollywood friends dropped him when the allegations emerged … The work has dried up, and he’s no longer Mr. Big Shot. He’s so lonely and down that he rarely leaves the house.” Once he sells the mansion, the insider thinks Matt will stick around the Hamptons. He was spotted there in December and looked “like absolute hell,” a source said at the time.

“He was rail thin, white as a sheet, and has lost all of his hair. He looked very sick and rundown,” the insider revealed to In Touch in late 2018. “There have been talks about how he’s trying for a comeback, but he would never be able to be on television now with the way he looks. It would shock the public. It’s really awful because he’s clearly not taking good care of himself.” And now he’s losing his house too. His job, his marriage, his homes, his reputation — what else has Matt got to lose?
