Mara Wilson shared a touching essay about her fellow child star Michelle Trachtenberg, recalling how her friend was bullied at school over her fame while praising the late star’s talent.

“This wasn’t supposed to happen. She was too young. She’d worked too hard. I always thought I would get the chance to see her again, to tell her how much I’d always looked up to her. To tell her the times we spent together as children were some of the best of my life,” Mara, 37, wrote in an essay for Vulture published on Tuesday, March 18.

“In retrospect, it feels as though we were the last generations of child actors who were allowed to be kids,” the Mrs. Doubtfire star continued.

Mara rocketed to child stardom in 1996 in Matilda while Michelle did the same with Harriet the Spy the same year.

Mara recalled how Michelle was “smart” and not showy during their early years in Hollywood.

“Not only was she nice, I realized, but she was remarkably intelligent. Yet she managed not to be condescending and didn’t try to impress with big words, the way other kids (including me) might have,” the Good Girls Don’t author wrote. “She was smart, but she was also self-possessed, and didn’t need to show off.”

The two later attended the same middle school, and while Mara wrote that “everybody fell in love with Michelle Trachtenberg,” she was still bullied about her stardom.

The Miracle on 34th Street star recalled Michelle pulled her aside one day and asked her if other kids were cruel to her.

“Are the kids here mean to you? Because they are to me,” Mara remembered about her conversation with the Buffy the Vampire Slayer alum.

“They call me Harriet the S–t, Harriet the Bitch, Harriet the Bitchy Spy … and so much worse. They never stop,” Mara recalled Michelle telling her.

Mara said that she “had never seen Michelle cry before” prior to their chat and that she was usually “perfectly composed and confident.”

“It wasn’t just that she was being bullied. It was that there wasn’t any way she could get them not to hate her,” the A Simple Wish star continued about her friend.

“Every time I even heard someone say ‘Michelle Trachtenberg,’ a kid would jump in to say that they’d heard she was mean, full of herself, a total bitch,” Mara continued.

She did her best to defend the Gossip Girl alum, telling the haters, “‘She’s not … she’s really nice!'”

“So much of being a child actor is about making everyone happy. It felt cruelly ironic to be so hated when our raison d’être was getting people to like us,” Mara said of the bullying from classmates.

Michelle was found unresponsive in her New York City apartment on February 26 and was declared dead after paramedics arrived. She was 39 years old.

Her cause of death was listed as “undetermined,” the New York Medical Examiner’s office confirmed to In Touch on February 27.

A source told the New York Post that the cause of death was listed in that manner after her family reportedly objected to an autopsy. The medical examiner’s office was “obligated to honor the family’s request due to the state’s public health law,” according to the insider. Only an external examination of the body could be completed.

Sources told multiple outlets after Michelle’s death that she recently underwent a liver transplant, noting that complications from the surgery may have contributed to her death. An insider told the New York Post that the Ice Princess star’s body may have rejected the organ.

Michelle spoke of her experiences with being bullied at school in a heartbreaking February 13, 2020, Instagram post showing a photo of her as a child.

“So. It’s Valentine’s week. Back in my day all the kids had to write a bulls–t Valentine’s Day card to everyone in the class. I never got one on purpose, everyone got a Valentine card. No one ever gave me one and they thought I didn’t need the attention,” she explained.

“The kids and staff all laughed and thought everyone else should get one, being an actress since I was 3, apparently, I didn’t need one. No one gave a thought I was helping my family pay bills. I was just the girl on the TV, it was just that their kid wasn’t on TV,” Michelle continued.

“This is challenging for me to post as people always contact me on social media saying oh my brother my sister went to school with you, you were best friends! False. The kids were cruel. There is no need to harp on the past. But I still have scars from being thrown down stairs and slammed into lockers headfirst,” the former child star revealed.

Michelle added, “I write this to every child, teen, person, out there who is bullied. You are something. Do not put your value in someone else. Not letting them win, is your win.”
