Gone far too soon. Luke Perry sadly passed away on March 4 at the young age of 52, having never recovered from a “massive” stroke less than a week earlier. Now, on March 13, we’ve learned the Riverdale and 90210 actor‘s official cause of death after his autopsy report was obtained by In Touch.

The autopsy reveals Perry’s death was caused by an “ischemic cerebrovascular accident,” otherwise known as an ischemic stroke. This most common type of stroke is caused when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel and cuts off a part of the brain from the flow of blood and oxygen, with dire results. The report also reveals that Perry’s body was transported from Burbank, CA, where he died, to Dickson, TN, to be buried on March 11.

Costars, friends, family, and fans alike were stunned by his stroke, and even more shocked and devastated by his unexpected passing. Though Perry experienced a cancer scare in 2015 after doctors discovered precancerous growths during a colonoscopy, he hasn’t shown any obvious signs of health problems since. As a matter of fact, just after his stroke, an insider told In Touch exclusively that he has been “doing very well health-wise.”

After the shocking stroke, Perry was rushed to the hospital. “Family members scrambled to the hospital and are by his side,” a source told In Touch exclusively on February 28. “He was fortunate that he wasn’t alone at his home and help arrived quickly.” Despite doing everything they could — like sedating him in hopes of protecting his brain and giving him a chance at recovery — doctors were not able to save him.

“He was surrounded by his children, Jack and Sophie, fiancé, Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, stepfather Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder and other close family and friends,” Luke’s rep, Arnold Robinson, said in a statement. “The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world.” Our hearts go out to Perry’s loved ones in this tragic time.
