With the milestone Survivor 50 ahead, some viewers are wondering if Jeff Probst will retire after 25 years as the show’s host. In Touch breaks down what he’s said about leaving and fan theories about when Jeff might depart.
Is Jeff Probst Retiring After ‘Survivor 50’?
Jeff hopes to keep going as long as the show is still “fun” after it reaches 50 seasons.
“I have no intention of wanting to stop so long as the show continues to be fun and the people applying continue to be interesting,” he said during a December 2023 episode of the “On Fire” podcast about whether Survivor 50 would be the end for him.
“I still love Survivor very much,” Jeff continued, “I think that’s pretty clear.”
Jeff Probst Will Stay With ‘Survivor’ as Long as the Current Production Team Is in Place
“The biggest thing for me is keeping our team together,” Jeff said during the podcast about staying with the show. “That’s sort of the whole enchilada, because I get way more credit than I deserve.”
The host and executive producer was seemingly referring to fellow E.P.’s including Matt Van Wagenen, Kahaia Pearson, Jesse Jensen and David Dryden.
“This show is made by a giant group, and we’re all in it together, and I would not want to do the show with another team,” Jeff said about his own alliance of coworkers. “It would be difficult, if not impossible, to start over with new people. So I’m in it as long as everybody else on the team is in it.”
When Was Jeff Probst Promoted to ‘Survivor’ Executive Producer Status?
Jeff was elevated to becoming an executive producer in 2010. Up until then, he had only served as the competition show’s host since its debut in 2000. Jeff also serves as showrunner and had an active hand in all aspects of Survivor‘s production.
Some ‘Survivor’ Fans Hope for a Show Shakeup
After the show’s lackluster season 48 in 2025, some fans hoped that having Jeff depart after Survivor 50 would breathe new life into the legendary reality show.
“Survivor needs a reboot without Jeff Probst. He’s gone from host to showrunner. And he’s lost the point after so many years. It’s okay – It happens, and he was great! But this is getting untenable,” one person wrote on X in May 2025.
“I’m convinced at this point that we’ll only see a material change in the show if/when Jeff retires. Maybe they’ll surprise us by changing it up after 50 though,” a viewer wrote on Reddit in March 2025.
A second Reddit user claimed, “Survivor will continue on its current path indefinitely until it gets cancelled if it no longer makes a profit, which will probably be a long time. Only thing we can hope for is Jeff retiring and the executive producers suddenly deciding to retract a lot of sh—y game mechanics over the past like ten years (assuming the other EPs aren’t as stubborn as Jeff is, but one can only hope).”
Some Contestants Have Been Critical of Jeff Probst’s Decisions as Host
During a Survivor 48 episode, Jeff had contestants chant “fried chicken and waffles” over and over after he offered up the food as a reward they would be playing for.
Contestant Mary Zhengwrote on X after the episode aired, “Y’all have to know how much my soul died when we were forced to sing the chicken and waffles song.”
Jeff, however, thought it was great.
“I think this is a really fun example of where the game is right now in terms of the playfulness of the players with each other and with me,” he said on his “On Fire” podcast. “The how something like this happens is really just everybody being open to having some fun and taking some chances.”
“The phrase fried chicken and waffles is just so fun to say. And it conjures up this fantastic meal. So, I thought maybe I should see if we could just all start chanting it,” he explained about why he started the cringeworthy moment.
