Panettiere was open about the strained relationship between herself and Vogel, 70, in her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, which was released earlier this year. In the book, the Heroes alum said she felt more like her mother’s “assistant, confidant, and therapist” as opposed to her daughter.
“Lesley is Hayden’s mother, but that doesn’t erase the history between them,” a source told Rob Shuter‘s Naughty But Nice Substack on Tuesday, August 18. “There are people around Hayden who believe those closest to her should be making these decisions, especially after everything that happened between Hayden and her mother.”
The source added that they felt like Panettiere’s funeral should focus on her and not “old family battles.”
“Everyone needs to put their personal history aside and ask one question: What would Hayden have wanted?” the source concluded.

Panettiere died at the age of 36 on Sunday, August 16. As In Touch previously reported, the Nashville actress was seen flying out of LAX the day prior with her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brian Hickerson. The two traveled to Greenville, South Carolina, and on Sunday, paramedics responded to a call reporting a “cardiac arrest.” Audio of the call was obtained by People and the word “overdose” was mentioned as well.
“The preliminary investigation has not indicated any signs of foul play or suspicious circumstances,” the Greenville Police Department said in a statement to the publication. “An acquaintance of Ms. Panettiere placed the 911 call.”
Her family later confirmed the news of her death in a statement.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father, Skip, said in a statement to ABC News on Sunday. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her – and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
Panettiere leaves behind 11-year-old daughter Kaya, whom she shared with ex-fiancé Wladimir Klitschko.
