Gypsy Sisters Alums Annie Small and Kayla Williams React to Ironic Motor Oil Tanning Scene
Gypsy Sisters alums Annie Small and Kayla Williams are reacting to some of their past antics on the show, including a moment where they used motor oil as tanning lotion.
The sisters discussed the season 1 scene during the first episode of their new podcast, “The Gossiping Gypsy Sisters,” as seen in a clip shared by Reality Redux on Instagram on Sunday, March 23. “In this first episode, there’s some pretty ironic scenes,” Annie said, although a GIF over the video indicated that she meant to say “iconic.”
“Such as Kayla, you rubbing motor oil over your entire body. Crazy girl,” she continued.
A clip of the 2013 episode of Gypsy Sisters played, in which Kayla, 43, explained that it wasn’t “just oil” but “high-tech synthetic oil.” Kayla’s daughter Danielle, 26, could be seen rubbing the motor oil on her mother’s stomach as Kayla explained that it was “making [her] real shiny” and was “really, really good moisture for your skin.” However, it didn’t have the best smell.
On the podcast, Kayla didn’t seem to have any regrets about tanning with motor oil back in the day. “I don’t know if it’s the safest thing to use or not, but it will definitely give you one hell of a tan. And baby, it did!” she said. “I won that debate.”
Kayla explained that she carried on the tradition from their mother, who also grew up using motor oil as a tanning lotion. “If mother tanned in motor oil, I’m all tanned in motor oil because, I mean, moms know it best, right?” she added. “She definitely knew it best because it gave me one hell of a tan.”
However, Annie wasn’t convinced and told listeners not to try tanning with motor oil at home. “It’s not healthy!” she said.

“We do not recommend that,” Kayla concluded.
Of course, motor oil wasn’t the only unconventional tanning lotion the stars of Gypsy Sisters used on the show. In another episode, the women had a tanning competition to see if motor oil or butter helped them get a better tan.
“Guarantee you, if you put an egg on me, it’d be fried right now,” Annie said after slathering butter on herself.
TLC’s Gypsy Sisters served as a spinoff to My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding and followed the day-to-day lives of Romanichal women in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The series aired four seasons between 2013 and 2015.
Following the show’s cancellation due to low ratings, Kayla divorced her husband of 17 years, Richard, and tied the knot with a man named Douglas Cooper in October 2017. The marriage didn’t last, and she later married Benny Small in 2018. Kayla appears to live in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and three of her kids — Richard, Danielle and Sissy — have children of their own. Douglas later died in 2023.
Meanwhile, Annie married Benny’s brother and lives in a camper next door to her sister, she revealed on “Gossiping Gypsy Sisters.”
“I couldn’t picture not looking out my door and screaming across the yard at you now,” Annie joked.
“The whole campground knows who we are, that’s for sure,” Kayla said.
