FEATURE In Touch With Farmer Wants a Wife
Farmer Wants a Wife has an impressive track record: The dating show — which airs in 34 countries — has resulted in 226 marriages and 565 children (and counting)!
Season 3’s Matt Warren, Jay Woods, John Sansone and Colton Hendricks were hoping to join those ranks as they brought a group of women back to their ranches in the hopes of finding love. While the strapping foursome are tight-lipped about how things ultimately ended, they promise more twists and turns than a bull at a rodeo.
“Everybody will be surprised,” says Colton, 28.
Adds John, 25: “I’m not sure anyone expects how things are going to end.”
Here, Colton (a single dad to Souther, 3, and an Arkansas cattle rancher), John (a law student who runs the family farm in Missouri), Jay (an Alabama hay and cattle farmer), 26, and Matt (a newly minted California avocado farmer), 30, exclusively talk to In Touch’s Fortune Benatar about their journey.

How do you feel about how things turned out for you?
Colton: We’re always happy around here. We live and we learn.
John: I’m very happy.
Matt: It all worked out how it was supposed to. Regardless of the outcome, I still have good relationships with all the girls, which I’m happy about.
Jay: It was definitely an unexpected ride for me.
John, a clip of Samantha rejecting your kiss went viral. How are you?
John: I pretty much blacked out when it happened. I felt somewhat humiliated, but I quickly came back to reality and respected her decision. Honestly, it’s hilarious.

What kind of woman were you looking for going into the show?
Colton: I want a partner who’s my best friend and is dedicated to our team winning. In terms of mother qualities…if my son’s being bad and she’s with him, I want his ass whooped because I want to raise good kids.
John: The number one thing is faith — everything I do is based around that. And I was raised in a very close family and I would want the same for my future children.
Matt: Faith is a must-have. Second to that is family. And then someone who wants kids. I want a lot of them. I’m also pretty active and try to be health-conscious so someone who’s into that kind of lifestyle.
Jay: [I] want them to be a beautiful person on the outside — but inside is what really matters. Do they treat others well? Do they have that potential to be a great mother and to raise [kids] in the Southern country farm lifestyle?
What are your red flags?
Colton: [If] she doesn’t think horses are beautiful [or] doesn’t get how I like to flirt. And finances are huge. If you’re going to be lazy and buy stuff all the time, I’m not paying for that.
John: A girl who says, “All my friends are guys.”
Matt: I was watching to see how they treated each other and the camera guys and producers. That tells a lot.
Jay: Somebody who’s always into drama. I don’t want a lot of drama in my life!
