Aubrey Plaza’s Husband Jeff Baena Dead at 47 by Apparent Suicide
Jeff Baena, Aubrey Plaza’s husband, has died. He was 47.
Baena reportedly died by suicide, according to a report from TMZ published on Saturday, January 4. The outlet stated that authorities responded to a home in the Los Angeles area mid-morning on Friday, January 3, after an assistant discovered his body. Along with Plaza, Baena is survived by his parents and siblings.
Baena was best known for his work as a director and screenwriter. Some of his most notable screenwriting credits include films like The Little Hours, I Heart Huckabees and Life After Beth. Baena was a graduate of NYU before moving to L.A. to pursue his career. Once there, he began working as a production assistant under famed director Robert Zemeckis. Baena then landed a job as writer-director David O. Russell’s assistant editor.
The Florida native worked with Plaza on several different projects, including 2014’s Life After Beth, 2016’s Joshy, 2017’s The Little Hours and 2022’s Spin Me Around.
In 2011, Baena began dating Plaza, 40, but it’s unclear exactly when they began their relationship. Ten years later, the couple had officially tied the knot, something she opened up about during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in December 2021.
“We got a little bored one night,” the former White Lotus star said at the time. “We got married and I’ll tell you how: Onehourmarriage.com. That’s real, look it up. It was our 10 year anniversary. We were in the [COVID-19] lockdown and things got a little crazy.”

Plaza continued, “I just said, ‘Hey, it’s our 10 year anniversary. We should do something like get an ice cream cone or do something special.’ Then I joked about getting married, and he’s like, ‘Well, we probably couldn’t get married that fast.’ I said, ‘Well, wouldn’t it be nice to get married on our actual anniversary?’ and then I Googled it and I found Onehourmarriage.com.”
The Parks and Rec alum said that while she asked if the employee could “come in an hour” and he suggested the following day instead. However, when she pointed out that they advertised a specific timeframe, the man reluctantly agreed to come but asked her to pay extra because he was in Alhambra, California, at the time.
“I created a very quick love altar in our yard. Facts of our love, little stones, smoke, fire. Things of that nature. Then the man from Alhambra showed up,” Plaza added. “I can’t remember a lot of it, it was fuzzy. But I’m pretty sure it was legal.”
When Plaza was cast in The White Lotus, her character dealt with the monotony longtime couples can sometimes fall into, and she later said that was something related to after being Baena for over a decade.
“I’ve been with my husband for 12 years,” Plaza said in an interview with GQ published in November 2022. “I relate to being in a relationship that has peaks and valleys, and going through a rough patch and comparing yourself to another couple that seems perfect.”
