Rory then picked up their daughter, Poppy, and made his way to the clubhouse.

When Did Rory McIlroy File for Divorce From Erica Stoll?

In May 2024, Rory filed for divorce after seven years of marriage. He filed the paperwork in Florida just days before he was set to play in the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

“Rory McIlroy’s communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed,” a representative for the golfer told the Irish Star on May 14, 2024. “They stressed Rory’s desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.”

Shortly before news of the divorce filing broke, rumors began circulating about Rory’s relationship with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis after he hugged her during an interview, but Us Weekly confirmed that the two were just friends.

“[They] only added fuel to the fire [of dating rumors] when they got flirty during a recent interview,” an insider exclusively shared with In Touch at the time. “[Rory] was a hard person to be married to. Erica was lonely in the marriage and she eventually reached a breaking point.”

Rory McIlroy Requested to Dismiss the Divorce Weeks Later

Rory and Erica’s split was short-lived. Less than a month after filing, he requested to dismiss the filing and confirmed that he and Erica had gotten back together.

“There have been rumors about my personal life recently, which is unfortunate,” Rory said in a statement to The Guardian on June 11, 2024. “Responding to each rumor is a fool’s game. Over the past weeks, Erica and I have realized that our best future was as a family together. Thankfully, we have resolved our differences and look forward to a new beginning.”

In July 2024, Rory and Erica seemed to be making good on their word of a “new beginning” when they were spotted enjoying a family vacation in Portugal.

“They had some problems that needed resolving,” a source exclusively told In Touch on August 1, 2024. “It took a lot of patience and understanding, but they’re in a much better place now. Spending time together as a family has been beneficial, too.”

The insider added, “They got off track but realized that divorce wasn’t the answer. They’re working hard at their relationship and look at this as the start of a new chapter. Neither Rory nor Erica want to let things get that bad again.”
