James first introduced Shelley to viewers during episode 6 of season 3, which premiered on the streaming service on April 2, 2025. He invited her to his 37th birthday at his home after initially meeting her online.

“She’s great. I really, really like her,” he explained to his parents. “I really hope that things will work out … She has a soft, quiet voice, but we have a lot in common. We like very similar movies, music, television series. We seem to have very similar social and political views.”

The evening went smoothly, and by the end of the night, the pair shared their first kiss — officially labeling their relationship with the titles of boyfriend and girlfriend.

“I definitely feel a very strong emotional connection,” he told her during the touching moment. “I really think we’re a great match for each other, absolutely. I’m definitely going to give it my best effort … Sometimes I have difficulty compromising, but I’m sure everybody does, you know … I suppose I can certainly make some certain compromises for you, of course.”

James was convinced his romance with Shelley was for the long-term, revealing that he truly believed he had found “The One.”

“She’s so wonderful. So amazing,” he told People in April 2025. “I can’t say enough just how great she is, and I’m absolutely certain that this time around it’s true love.”

James said he and Shelley “complemented” and “inspired each other to be better,” adding that they “bring out the best in each other.”

James and Shelley are still going strong post-filming. On April 8, 2025, Shelley excited fans with an adorable Instagram Reel capturing their day at a Renaissance Faire. Followers especially loved the sweet touch of cast member Abbey Romeo’s “Boyfriend Forever” playing in the background.

Abbey performed and wrote the song as a tribute to her boyfriend, David, during season 3 of Love on the Spectrum.

James shared the couple’s big milestone in an April 29, 2025, Instagram post revealing he and Shelley had been dating for a full year.

“I would like to wish a happy first anniversary to @shelley.wolfee! You are the most amazing and wonderful person whom I have ever met, and I love you more than what I can express in words!” he gushed in the caption of a photo showing the couple having a date night dinner out.
